LO VISUAL Y LA MÚSICA EN LA FAMÍLIA D’ARLEQUÍ DE ADRIÀ GUAL1

Resumen: La visión teatral de Adrià Gual era típicamente modernista, en el sentido de que los aspectos visuales y musicales deberían complementar el texto. Para Gual, igual que para otros innovadores del teatro europeo, la commedia dell’arte era una herramienta renovadora. En este artículo se analizan dos conferencias/espectáculos en los cuales Gual pretende educar al público sobre la commedia. En este análisis se emplean fotografías de figurines y escenografías, así como música que fue compuesta especialmente para La família d’Arlequí.

VISUAL TREATMENT IN ADRIÀ GUAL’S LA FAMÍLIA D’ARLEQUÍ

Abstract: Playwright, director, designer and teacher Adrià Gual was one of the major figures of the theatre not only of his native Catalonia but also of the whole of Spain at the end of the nineteenth century and in the early years of the twentieth. His concept of theatre was typically modernista in that the visual and musical elements should complement the spoken word.For Gual, as for some of the major innovators in European theatre, the commedia dell’arte was an important renovating tool. This article analyses two Gual productions –Arlequí vividor and La família d’Arlequí– in which Gual attempts to educate the public about commedia. I use photographs of costume designs and stage sets, as well as music composed especially for La família d’Arlequí, in my analysis of a Catalan version of total theatre.
